My guarantee: Eye the winners

Back in the Saddle by Johnny Hale | Carol, today I want to tell the folks that this week we are on the good ship "Freedom of the Seas!"

Oklahoma Sarah and I are hosting a lot of poker players on this poker cruise. We will be having some exciting live poker games and tournaments every day when we are not in port. Two of the events will be the Battle of the Caribbean and the World Poker Showdown.

I have been asked many times what it means when I give a poker player my Oklahoma guarantee.

Well, honey it depends on where I am. If I am not playing poker (in Oklahoma our word is our bond) and I tell you it is going to rain, you will need to get a bucket to catch the water. I am going to cause it to rain, even if I have to find a cloud and give it a squeeze.

When I am playing poker, if I were to say to you, "I have the best hand," then the rules of the "Oklahoma Guarantee" do not apply. That’s because we are now playing poker.

All is fair in love, war and when playing poker!

Now is this a double standard? Sure it is!

When you are playing poker, it is your job to try to deceive and hoodwink the other player into thinking your hand is stronger than his. Or, the reverse when you want him to think that his hand is stronger than yours.

Many players like Doyle or Slim use conversation as one of their best skills. Yes, believe it or not, they are playing poker all the time, even when not at the table with you.

OK-J Poker Tip

You do not have to reinvent the wheel to be a winner. A surefire way to win is to watch how the winners are playing. Look at the way they bet and study the hands they show when they win a pot.

One of my favorite all-time baseball players was Yogi Berra, but he also spoke words of wisdom. One I like is, "You can observe a lot just by watching!"

Until next time, stay lucky!
