Field of 19 to be entered in 129th Derby

Although entries for the 129th running of the Kentucky Derby won’t be drawn until Wednesday, the expected field, including some horses listed as being "on the bubble," has received a number of press reports.

As we go to press, this is the way the field (all three-year-olds) shapes up:

ATSWHATIMTALKABOUT: A dark bay colt by A.P Indy — Lucinda K by Red Ransom. Owned by Hughes and Biscuit Stables LLC; Trained by Ronald Ellis and Ridden by Dave Flores. He has started five times with two wins, a second and one third with earnings of $164,120. He was bred by R & R King Stables in Kentucky and was sold at auction in February 2002 for $900,000.

BRANCUSI: A dark bay colt by Deputy Commander — Treize by Alysheba. Owned by Michael B. Tabor; Trained by Patrick Biancone and Ridden by Tony Farina. He has started seven times with one win, two seconds and three thirds with earnings of $229,220. He was bred by Nancy Much in Kentucky and was sold at auction in August 2001 for $375,000.

BUDDY GIL: A bay gelding by Eastern Echo — Really Rising by For Really. Owned by Desperado Stables of Merrill McFadden; Trained by Jeff Mullins; Ridden by Gary Stevens. He has started nine times with five wins, one second, one third and earnings of $729,455. He was bred by Billingsley Creek Ranch in Kentucky and was purchased privately.

DOMESTIC DISPUTE: A chestnut colt by Unbridled’s Song — Majestical Moment by Magesterial. Owned by Chuck Winner & Dave Bienstock; Trainer by Paddy Gallagher and Ridden by Alex Solis. He has started nine times with two wins, two seconds and a third with earnings of $244.320. He was bred by Gary Garber in Kentucky and recently was sold by owner-breeder Gary Garber.

EMPIRE MAKER: A dark bay colt by Unbridled — Toussaud by El Gran Senor. Owned and bred by Juddmonte Farms Inc. in Kentucky; Trained by Bobby Frankel and Ridden by Jerry Bailey. He has started five times with three wins, one second and one third and earnings of $1,115,800.

EYE OF THE TIGER: A bay colt by American Chance — Dial a Trick by Phone Trick. Owned and bred by John D. Gunther in Kentucky; Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer; Riden by Corey Nakatani. He has started five times with two wins, one second and two thirds with earnings of $114,474.

FUNNY CIDE: A chestnut gelding by Distorted Humor — Belle’s Good Cide by Slewacide. Owned by Sackatoga Stable of Jackson Knowlton; Trained by Barclay Tagg and Ridden by Jose Santos. He has started six times with three wins and two seconds with earnings of $439,185. He was bred by Winstar Farm in New York and was sold at auction in August 2001 for $22,000.

INDIAN EXPRESS: A bay colt by Indian Charlie — Liba’s Choice by Halo. Owned by Phil Chess; Trained by Bob Baffert and Ridden by Tyler Baze. He has started four times with two wins and one second with earnings of $154,842. He was bred by Highland Farms Inc. in Utah and was sold at auction in October 2001 for $5,000.

KAFWAIN: A dark brown colt by Cherokee Run — Swazi’s Moment by Moment of Hope. Owned by The Thoroughbred Corporation; Trained by Bob Baffert and Ridden by Pat Valenzuela. He has started 11 times with four wins, two seconds and two thirds. He was sold at auction in February 2002 for $720,000.

LONE STAR SKY: A bay colt by Conquistador Cielo — Ministrada by Deputy Minister. Owned by Walter L. New; Trainer by Thomas Amoss, and ridden by Calvin Borel. He has started 10 times with three wins, three seconds and one third with earnings of $480,735.

OFFLEE WILD: A dark brown colt by Wild Again — Alvear by Seattle Slew. Owned by Azalea Stables; Trained by Thomas Smith and Ridden by Mark Guidry. He has started six times with two wins, one second and one third and earnings of $182,785.

OUTTA HERE: A chestnut colt by Dehere — Just out by Forty Niner. Owned by Bill Currin and Al Elsma.; Trained by Bill Currin, and Ridden by Kent Desormeaux. He was bred in Kentucky by Ralph Wilson Jr. andwas sold at auction in September 2001 for $37,000. He has started eight times with two wins, two seconds and two thirds and earnings of $504,260.

PEACE RULES: A chestnut colt by Jules — Hold to Fashion by Hold Your Peace. Owned by Edmund A. Gann; Trained by Bobby Frankel, and ridden by Edgar Prado. He was bred in Florida by Newchance Farm and was sold at auction in March 2002 for $35,000. He has started eight times with five wins, one second and one third with earnings of $1,124,990.

SCRIMSHAW: A bay colt by Gulch — Rogue Girl by Sham. Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis; Trained by D. Wayne Lukas and ridden by Cornelio Velasquez. He was bred in Kentucky by Stan and Ingrid Stefansky and was sold at auction in April 2002 for $550,000. He has started five times with three wins and one third with earnings of $284,900.

SENOR SWINGER: a grey colt by El Prado — Smooth Swinger by Kris S. Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis; Trained by Bob Baffert. There was no rider named. He has started four times and has two wins with earnings of $82,140. He was bred by Bob Ackerman in Kentucky.

SIR CHEROKEE: A bay colt by Cherokee Run — La Cucina by Last Tycoon. Bred and owned by Domino Stud of Lexington Inc. Trained by Michael A. Tomlinson and ridden by Terry Thompson. He has started 11 times with three wins, three seconds and earnings of $393,975.

SUPAH BLITZ: A dark bay colt by Mecke — Boots ”˜N Jackie by Major Moran. Owned and bred by Bee Bee Stables; Trained by Emanuel Tortora and Ridden by Rosemary Homeister Jr. He has started 15 times with two wins, seven seconds and three thirds with earnings of $437,330.
