Horses to Watch

Apr 29, 2003 6:28 AM

(Opens Wednesday, April 23)

Trainers to watch: Jerry Hollendorfer and Bill Spawr have been claiming horses in bunches, both gearing up for a big meet. Hollendorfer usually goes to Chicago this time of year with a big stable, but has decided to go to Holly Park.

QUICK N FANCY: Had no shot at the win in last when beaten by super live Mullins horse, but was five best of the rest. Will wire a similar field at Hollywood off the claim.

GULCHIE: Has returned to form and likes the Hollywood turf. Should score soon and at a nice price.

THIRD HALF: Frankel first time starter got off at 19-1 and just got beat a nose. Look for the stretch out and the winner’s circle in next.

URBAN KING: Was off slow and got stuck inside. Had to swing wide for his stretch run but finished fastest for the show dough. No mistakes in next going long on the grass.

MISS DOUBLE DOTS: Was the big steam horse in last but never fired. Got claimed by Mike Mitchell and will break maiden in next at a nice price. $$$

INDIAN BLANKET: Just another Indian Charlie first timer that ran lights out. This one should move up and score again.

HITCHCOCK’S BEST: Sitting on a wire job in next.

CLEVER MISS CAPER: Ran a winning race but just couldn’t get up for the win. This girl fires her best shot every time and is due for some luck.

LAKESIDE TRAIL: Broke from the 11 hole and got caught hung out to dry. Was wide the entire trip but ran on with determination to get second. Should break through in next with a clean trip.

ANNIE N ME: Just loved this girl in last but got beat in a head bob by a first time starter, but was much the best of the rest. No mistakes in next, bet with confidence.

SHELTER COVE: Hadn’t been seen since Del Mar of ”˜01, but ran his eyes out to finish a fast closing second. If the race didn’t take too much out of him, look for the money run in next going long on the turf.

ARTIST’S STUDIO: Was crowded at the start and had to be dropped back to last. Made a big run in the stretch to just miss second despite being in tight and taken up. All systems go in next going long on the grass. $$$

FLYINGDOWNBAYLAUREL: Was 39-1 in last and ran to those high odds and hadn’t run a good one to date. For some reason got claimed by the red hot Englander/Mullins combo, so they must see something. Very interested in his next start.

INDIO RED: Was wide, made a steady gain, but could not run down the lone speed. Next time.

RUBY FRANCO: Stumbled at the start and was caught behind horses. Jock didn’t try. Look for a big turnaround in next at a big price.

WILD GIRL: Ran a big race in her first as a 3-year-old but got beat by the dead chalk. Could see a wire job in next.

LES BE FRIENDS: Likes it here up north and should just keep on winning.

KONA BREEZE: Was stuck on the rail behind horses. Swung off the wood looking for a clear path, steadied and split horses late to just miss by a nose.

TOMS BOOMER: Steadied several times to lose all chance. Will redeem in next.

DAVONNIER: First timer was making a nice move when he ran out of room. Was steadied the entire length of the stretch. Go for it in next. $$$.

FLYING FUGITIVE: Lacked room and steadied. Swung to the outside entering the lane and was closing fastest. Clear sailing gets the job done in next at a price.
