Summer pool parties are back and they’re hotter than ever.
Helping to raise temperatures to fever levels is the participation of exotic dancers and strippers from Las Vegas men’s clubs.
For instance, last week at the Palms, the hotel’s Skin Pool was the setting for Bump ’N Grind II, a volleyball tournament that matched eight teams from various nightlubs.
The event naturally attracted a testosterone-hyped crowd of men who cheered the women on, perhaps hoping for a female melee reminiscent of the "Less filling! Tastes great!" poolside beer commercial.
But the volleyball competition was hardly frivolous. First place paid $5,000 to the winning team, which was the Palms’ own N9NE group. Team members consisted of cocktail waitresses from the Palms’ Ghost Bar and N9NE steakhouse.
Placing second was a team from Spearmint Rhino (they took home $3,000), while third place went to Olympic Garden (no cash prize, but there were parting gifts).
Not to be outdone, the Stratosphere hosts Wild Nights pool parties every Thursday through August 28.
"It wasn’t enough to have a pool party with great music, beverages and food with one of the best views from our pool deck," said David Krause, director of marketing for the Stratosphere. "We want to answer the pressing question of which local gentlemen’s cabaret is best by having dancers go head-to-head in competition."
Competition? Wild Nights will feature head-to-head competition between exotic dancers from gentlemen’s cabarets such as Olympic Gardens, Sapphire, Palomino and Pussycats, in events such as water volleyball, water basketball, diving for dollars, karaoke and trivia contests. One club will be named Wild Nights champion at the final pool party August 28
In addition to the contests, a DJ will play dance music, and Wild 102’s "Loco" will serve as the host for the weekly festivities. Food and a variety of beverages will be available for purchase.
Admission is free for women and $10 for men. Women will also drink for free from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Men receive their first beer free of charge.
Another hotspot for waterlogged party animals is the Hard Rock pool, which hosts "Sex on the Beach" pool parties every Wednesday night beginning at 7 p.m.
The festivities include live music and DJ’s, exotic cocktails and tasty treats. The $10 admission for guys includes their first cocktail. As usual, women are admitted free.
Suncoast last week kicked off its third year of "Wild Wednesday Pool Parties," which feature live music, door prizes and grand prize drawings. Admission is $2 for women and $5 for men, which includes all-you-can-eat appetizers as well as a "Pool Party Fun Book" good for three free drinks, two-for-one breakfast at the buffet and a 50-coin bonus on a 500-coin casino jackpot.
The admission also gets each guest into a $500 cash drawing held at the end of the party. The last Wednesday of each month features a grand prize drawing for prizes like a Caribbean cruise, and a Saturn automobile. Pool parties will be held through Aug. 27.
The Las Vegas Hilton hosts its second year of Summer Pool Parties, held on June 21, 28, July 12, 19, 24, August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. The $40 admission is higher than most, but includes a better selection of food, including a roasted pig on a spit.
Plus, partiers can drink from a bottomless keg of Miller beer while hobnobbing the Miller Girls. Activities include limbo and dance contests and a chance to win a Jeep Wrangler.
Other parties worth checking out are Wednesday Jazz Nights at Green Valley Ranch Station, and Mandalay Bay’s Summer Concert Series, which is held picnic-style on its sandy beach.
