Palm Springs savors casinos

Sep 16, 2003 5:19 AM

Our hats are off to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in having the vision to develop a "lovely casino" in downtown Palm Springs.

We have been given a wonderful tool to bring more people to visit Palm Springs. The Riviera Resort and Racquet Club is hosting a party that celebrates the 40th anniversary tribute to the movie "Palm Springs Weekend." The movie was filmed at the ÂíRiviera.

Connie Stevens, a frequent performer in Las Vegas, starred in the film and will appear in the tribute. The speed at which the new casino is being built and the obvious attention to detail will make this a first-class building.

Yes to Cheektowaga

In a letter to the editor, there is at least one big supporter of a casino in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga.

"The city has the opportunity to take advantage of our greatest asset ”” our location as the gateway to Buffalo. Our community is located along the New York State Thruway and we have the airport, the Amtrak station, the Galleria and the Kensington Expressway.

We may become the commercial hub of Western New York in spite of ourselves. If Buffalo wants to find a way to recapture a time long gone, it should have been more cooperative with the Senecas.

City officials should call a halt to expensive feasibility studies and make decent schools a priority. A casino would enhance the commercial base.
