BC meSs: Later, not Sooner

Dec 9, 2003 9:32 AM

By now, you’re tired of reading and hearing all about how wrong the BCS was to cost USC a shot at playing for the national champion, in all likelihood, because Notre Dame and Hawaii lost last Saturday.

Yes, the system stinks. Oklahoma can win the national title and not its own Big XII championship. But, we must move on. The bowls do have some interesting match ups and, from a betting perspective, the BCS can do nothing to alter that value to the Las Vegas sports books.

GamingToday contains a complete list of all the bowls, the times and dates so we’ll give some quick comments on the early lines, which came in hot off the press late Monday afternoon.

Memphis (—4½) vs North Texas: The favored Tigers have offensive edge, while North Texas should be more motivated.

Miami, Ohio (—13) vs Louisville: The "over" is 69, which interests us more. Expect lots of scoring.

NC State (—12½) vs Kansas: The upstart Jayhawks appear overmatched vs. the high-octane Wolfpack.

Boise St (—10) vs TCU: Two excellent teams with nothing to gain by playing each other. Another high-scoring affair.

Oregon St (—3) vs New Mexico: Lobos a very live dog at the Las Vegas Bowl.

Hawaii (—11) vs Houston: The visiting Cougars should be up for this one.

Bowling Green (—8½) vs N’western: The mighty MAC makes a statement here.

Virginia Tech (—3) vs Cal: It all depends on how serious Hokies this game. Cal has a shot.

Virginia (—1½) vs Pitt: Solid match up. Momentum riding with favored Cavaliers.

Nebraska (—2½) vs Michigan St: Running team vs passing team. It’s all on Smoker.

Texas Tech (—13) vs Navy: Too much Tech passing for Navy to handle. Could go over 80.

Wash St (NL) vs Texas: It’s the Holiday Bowl so expect another thriller.

UCLA (—3½) vs Fresno St: You can make an argument that neither team belongs.

Auburn (—3) vs Wisconsin: SEC vs Big Ten always an attractive match up. Plenty of stars in this one.

Minnesota (—2½) vs Oregon: The Gophers should be highly motivated.

Utah (—2½) vs Southern Miss: One of the better match ups from a betting standpoint.

Arkansas (—2½) vs Missouri: Huge match up for recruiting purposes. For once Shreveport scheduled a good one.

Boston Col (NL) vs Colorado St: Little history between the two. We like State QB Bradlee Van Pelt.

Florida (—3½) vs Iowa: The Hawkeyes are a very solid football team.

Maryland (—3½) vs W. Virginia: Too bad these teams play each other each year. No real intrigue.

Georgia (—3) vs Purdue: Another SEC vs Big 10 match up where underdog has more to play for.

USCC (—6½) vs Michigan: Traditional Rose Bowl encounter. Southern Cal will be tested, but this team is loaded.

Florida St (-1) vs Miami: Another match up of teams that meet each season. Should have traded with Gator Bowl. Good one though.

Ole Miss (-1½) vs Oklahoma St: Eli Manning on display one final time.

Tennessee (-6) vs Clemson: See of Orange in Atlanta. Visiting Tigers closed strong and could pull upset.

Kansas St (-6) vs Ohio St: K-State needs to win to show Oklahoma upset was no fluke. Buckeyes tough test.

Georgia Tech (-8½) vs Tulsa: Wish Connecticut or Northern Illinois got this bid.

Boring match up.

Oklahoma (-6) vs LSU: Second chance at No. 1 for Sooners. Superdome will be rocking for Bayou Bengals. Will be fun.
