Flash! Padres in, Spoonhour out

Feb 17, 2004 3:59 AM

With baseball rapidly approaching, I have been in and out of several sports books looking for some future bets to invest.

While talking to several race and sports book managers they all had the same thing to say, that the hot team is the San Diego Padres to win the National League Pennant. They just may be a good team to get down on early before the prices go up.

”¦That was an embarrassing performance on Sunday by UNLV at Missouri just getting blown out. 94-60. I think Charlie Spoonhour will be gone in the very near future. Will the not so running Rebels ever get back to their glory days? I recently heard through my connections that you just could be seeing Mr. Bobby Knight himself at UNLV in the very near future.

Don’t know if that’s good or bad?

Saber’s Slam Dunks
Wednesday, Feb. 18

Texas Tech (+2) at Colorado:Tech’s third game in seven days while the Buffaloes get a week off to get ready for hated Knight and company. Boulder one tough place to play and the schedule really favors Colorado in this Big 12 matchup. COLORADO.

Duke (—4) at Wake Forest: The Blue Devils coming off loss at NC State now must go into Winston-Salem to face the Demon Deacons off a nice win against Cincinnati. Duke won first meeting 84-72 as a 10-point favorite. Wake beat them here last year by 14. Would love Wake here if Duke would have got the win at State on Sunday but still must take the points in this spot if able to get two buckets. WAKE FOREST

Marquette (PK) at Saint Louis. Disciplined Billikens looking for some revenge as they lost a heart breaker at Marquette 61-59. Saint Louis trying to break two-year losing streak at the hands of the Golden Eagles. Take the Billikens in this low scoring game. SAINT LOUIS.

Thursday, Feb. 19

Georgia Tech (+1) at Maryland. GT in second of back to back road games beat the Terps in Atlanta by 10 as an 8-pt favorite. Maryland just trying to stay alive and will have an all out effort in this revenge game. Lay the point. MARYLAND.

Syracuse —3 at Georgetown: Orangemen have a real tough go of it as their season winds down to the Big East tournament. They must go on the road 4 of their last 5 games. This will be their first and a must win. Lay the three. SYRACUSE.

Florida St (+9) at N.Carolina. Heels got caught coming off big game with UConn when they went into Tallahassee and blew a big lead en route to a 9-pt overtime loss. The Chapel Hill fans will be in a frenzy for this big time revenge game. Lay the wood with the Tar Heels.

Louisville (+5) at Cincinnati: This Conference USA game is huge for both teams. Bearcats stuck in park recently but this will be their breakout game. The Cardinals blew them out of Freedom Hall (93-66) and Bearcats just haven’t been the same since. Look for Cincinnati to be fired up. Lay the points. CINCY

Dayton (+5) at Xavier: Flyers are the best team in the Atlantic 10 outside of St. Joseph’s after posting a fifth straight 20-win season. They handled the Musketeers by 7 at Dayton and now will be getting two hoops. Will take the points. DAYTON.

Notre Dame (+12) at Conn: Revenge doesn’t get any sweeter then this as the Irish must go into Storrs to face angry Huskies team who they beat 12 days ago in South Bend. Lay the wood. UCONN.

Stanford (—10) at UCLA: Third straight road game for the Cardinal, which seeks a three-year sweep of the limping Bruins. I will go against my normal strategy, go with my instincts and take the points. UCLA

California (PK) at USC: These two played nip and tuck in their first meeting and this one will also go down to the wire with USC getting the late win. SOUTHERN CAL.

UAB (+9) at Memphis: Must take the points here as Memphis just could overlook the Blazers. UAB.
