Gaming win up in January

Nevada casino revenue rose 4.4 percent in January, driven by a double-digit rise on the Las Vegas Strip, state regulators reported last week.

Statewide casino revenue rose to $882.1 million from $844.9 million, the Gaming Control Board reported.

Strip revenue roared ahead 12.3 percent to $482.5 million from $429.6 million, while downtown Las Vegas activity slowed to $54.3 million from $60.6 million.

Helping to fuel the increases was Chinese New Year, which fell in January this year rather than February in 2003, and an extra weekend day also helped the numbers, analysts said.
