MAYER’S 2 FOR TUESDAY PROS

Mar 23, 2004 3:33 AM

NBA

Suns (+7) at Cavaliers: The red hot Cavs must keep winning to secure the eighth and final playoff berth in the East. LeBron, Booz and Z have become a steady three-headed monster. Suns go in spurts but are playing for pride alone. That doesn’t pay our bills. CLEVELAND.

Pistons (-4) at Hornets: Larry Brown has sold the Pistons on his system now that Rasheed is aboard. Detroit is playing the best defense in the league. New Orleans will join the list of teams being held below 75 points. DETROIT.

Last week: 1-1

Season: 28-14.

NHL

Capitals at Islanders: The erratic Isles can virtually shut the door on Buffalo for the eighth playoff slot in the East with a win. The visiting Caps are a disgrace. Even lowly Pittsburgh is playing with more desire. Give at least the half-goal. NEW YORK.

Flyers at Hurricanes: Carolina can be tough in Raleigh, but the incentive is all Philly. Flyers will get a better price on the road and need the victory to perhaps secure the points title and home ice throughout the playoffs. PHILADELPHIA.

Last week: 0-2

Season: 18-24.
