Casino promotions spice up Derby Day

If you are in the market for a T-shirt or a mint julep glass, Las Vegas will be the place to be on Kentucky Derby Day, as many of the sports books around the city are offering those items as part of their promotions for the most famous horserace of them all.

There will also be numerous proposition bets, and two seminars on how to bet the race being offered on the night before the Derby.

A breakdown by casino of what is being offered in promotions during the week of the Run for the Roses shows the following opportunities open to bettors:

ALADDIN: A commemorative mint julep glass with every $20 wager on the derby; free food and beer with every $100 bet inside Sinbad’s Lounge; food and drink specials throughout the casino.

ARIZONA CHARLIE’S (EAST AND WEST): The casinos are giving away a T-shirt with every every $20 bet. The casinos will also be offering a twin quinella wager that could lead a $2 bettor to a $3,000 win. If there is no winner the twin quinella offer will be repeated on Sunday.

FIESTA HENDERSON: The casino, which will be taking its first action on a horse race with the Kentucky Derby, is offering a glass with a derby logo for every bettor wagering $20 on the race.

FLAMINGO: A mint julep glass for every $20 wagered on the derby; A party with an open bar and food for the admittance price of $50.

FREMONT: A free T -shirt with every win or place $25 wager on the derby.

GOLD COAST: The casino will be staging a two-day derby shootout tournament on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. There is a $300 entry fee and the requirement that the bettor make an $840 deposit in the form of 14 $60 wagers. The contest, which is also open to bettors at the Orleans and Sun Coast casinos, is confined to thoroughbred horses and has a 5 p.m. deadline. First prize will be $35,000 or 35 percent of the amount bet, second prize will be $17,000 or 17 percent of the amount wagered, third place will be $12,000 or 12 percent, fourth place will be $8,000 or eight percent, fifth place will be $5,000 or 5 percent, etc. On derby day the Arizona ballroom will be opened and gamblers will be offered a souvenir T-shirt or a glass with every $20 bet on the derby.

GOLDEN NUGGET: The casino will be offering a free T-shirt for every $50 wagered on the derby.

GREEN VALLEY RANCH: The casino will be offering T- shirt and glasses while they last to every gambler making a $20 bet on the derby

HARD ROCK CAFÉ: The casino will be celebrating the re-opening of its race and sports book by offering a Hard Rock pins to parimutual bettors who wager $25 on any race. The limited edition pins will be offered on a basis of one pin per person while the supply of 500 pins lasts.

HARRAH’S: The casino will be holding a drawing every 10 minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the prizes being either a T-shirt, blankets, mugs, hats, or sweatshirts. Bettors who wager $20 on the derby will also be given a mint julep glass.

FIESTA RANCHO: The casino will be offering a mint julep glass for every $20 bet on the derby. Fiesta Rancho will also be conducting 12 drawings from losing tickets at horse races around the country with the winners being awarded either polo shirts, mint julep glasses, baseball caps or polo shirts. After the tenth and 12th races at Churchill Downs, there will be special drawings from losing tickets at which the winners will be given complete sets of mint julep glasses from 1975 to 2004. The Kentucky Derby will be the tenth race at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

IMPERIAL PALACE: The casino will be offering a mint julep glass with every $20 wager and Kentucky Derby or Imperial Palace merchandise with a second chance drawing. There will also be a VIP party by invitation only for members of the casino’s turf and sports book club.

LAS VEGAS HILTON: Kentucky Derby bettors will be given either T-shirts or glasses if they wager $20 on the derby.

NEW FRONTIER: The casino will be offering mint julep glasses to bettors who wager $20 on the derby. There will be a party open to the public in the Cheyenne Room from 9 a.m. until after the race. There will be free coffee and Danish pastry for the first 100 bettors who will be able to watch the race on two big screen television sets. After the Kentucky Derby there will be a drawing from the losing tickets for a 42 inch plasma television set.

PALMS: The casino will be offering Funny Cide bobblehead dolls to gamblers who bet at least $20 on the derby. The offer is limited to one per person and is in effect for only as long as supplies last.

PLAZA: Starting at 10 a.m. the casino will be offering julep glasses to every bettor who wages at least $20 on the derby.

SAM’S TOWN: The sports book will be offering a seminar on how to bet the derby starting at 6 p.m. Friday. The seminar will be conducted in the race book and will be led by Eddie Delahoussaye, a former jockey who won the race twice before retiring.

STRATOSPHERE: The casino is planning a handicapping seminar for 6:30 on Friday. It will be led by Jay Kessler and Jerry Jackowitz, the nationally known handicapper. There will be complimentary food and beverage at the seminar. On race day there will be complimentary T-shirts given to $20 derby bettors. The race book is also offering a twin quinella wager in which a $2 bet could lead to a $3,000 win. If there is no winner on Saturday, the twin quinella offer will be repeated on Sunday. The twin quinella challenge will also be offered at both Arizona Charlie’s properties.

SUN COAST: The casino will be offering mint julep glasses or T-shirts to gamblers who bet $20 on the derby. There will be parties at the Sun Coast, Orleans and Gold Coast properties with live betting windows, big screen TVs, and complimentary refreshments.

SUNSET STATIONS: The casino will offer T-shirts to gamblers who bet $20 on the derby while the supply lasts and there will be food and beverages available in the sports book.

TERRIBLE’S: The casino will be offering T-shirts to gamblers who bet $20 on the derby.

TEXAS STATION: The casino will be offering T-shirts for bettors who gamble $20 on the derby. There will also be drawings from losing tickets for polo shirts.

ORLEANS: The casino will be offering either T-shirts or glasses to bettors who gamble $20 on the derby.

RIO: The casino will be offering T-shirts and mint julep glasses to bettors who wager $20 on the races.

VENETIAN: The casino will be offering T-shirts to gamblers who bet $25 on the derby.

WILD WILD WEST:The casino is offering T-shirts and drink specials for bettors who wager $20 on the Kentucky Derby.
