Desert Inn tower to crumble

Fans of implosions should take note that the last remaining buildings from the old Desert Inn will be imploded sometime before Halloween. Knowing Steve Wynn, who is developing his new mega resort on the site of the old D.I., it will probably occur on Halloween.

The buildings are currently housing the Wynn Art Gallery and his administrative offices. One tower was imploded in 2001.

His new resort, Wynn Las Vegas, is scheduled for completion in April 2005.

Algiers also earmarked for demolition

Fans of the wrecking ball should take note that the old Algiers, which turns 50 this year, will be leveled later this year. The small property across from Circus Circus is one of the last remaining motor court style motels from the 1950s but it has been sold to a Florida company that plans to tear it down and build a $400 million, 450-room condo and hotel complex. There are no details on the project other than the Algiers is expected to close by the end of summer and the new place is scheduled to open in summer 2006.
