From the hotel/casino that brought you poolside gaming comes a venture into thoroughbred racing contests.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will hold a free West Coast Contest every Wednesday starting July 7. The weekly contests involve the first five races at Southern California tracks. First place is slated to receive $800, with $200 awarded to the runnerup. There is only one entry allowed per person.

Contestants will be issued an ID number at registration. The number must be used on the contest bet slips. Customers that pick the winner of a race will get the mutual price along with 10 points. Second place predictions are worth the mutuel price plus five points. No credit is given for third.

Mutual prices will be capped at 20-1 for a win, 10-1 to place and 5-1 to show. All ties split the prize pool. Winnings may be picked up at the Hard Rock Race book the following day after 10 a,m. Check the Hard Rock race and sports book for more information.

Meanwhile, weekly horse racing contests continue throughout the Las Vegas area.

At the Orleans, Gold Coast Barbary and Suncoast, the first five races at Hollywood Park are free each Thursday. There is a $1,500 daily prize pool for gaining the most points based on the pari-mutuel payoffs and bonus points for the win, place and show.

A $1,000 progressive jackpot for picking 5-for-5 winners will be offered. If not hit, the pot carries over by $1,000 each day. Also, the contest on Fridays uses Arlington Park.
