From near or far, I need Del Mar

There is a lot of good stuff coming up for Las Vegas horse players. That includes beautiful Del Mar which opens its gates on Wednesday, July 21.

The highway will be flooded with the loyal Del Mar migration from the Vegas heat to the cool ocean breezes of the Pacific Ocean. I’m one of those faithful who have been making this short 4½-hour drive for the past 25 years.

For those of you that have recently moved here and have never had the pleasure of traveling to Del Mar where the surf truly does meet the turf, it is a must trip for all horse players. It’s a laid back atmosphere where fans sit in shorts and T-shirts and just relax the day away betting ponies and watching all those beautiful scantily clad California girls.

Just to mention some of the good stuff coming for us horse players. Jamie Shea, the very personable director of race and sports at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, will be getting her book involved in the thriving free race contests taking place throughout the city.

The Hard Rock contest will begin Wednesday, July 7 and will involve the first five races at whichever So Cal track may be running. Wednesday it will be Hollywood for a two-week stint until the move to Del Mar on July 21. This contest will offer $1,000 in prize money with $800 for first place and $200 for second. Entries are limited to one per person.

Stop over and see the new Hard Rock book and get ready to play. I’ll be there every Wednesday if you want to stop, say hello and give up some of those winners to help out my ticket. By the way the new book at the "Rock" is one very nice cozy spot that you will definitely like.

John Avello at Bally’s, who is noted for going all out on his ideas, has really come up with a winner. He is starting a free Pick 6 club for the Del Mar and Saratoga meets. Whenever there is a Pick 6 carryover of $100,000 at either track, Bally’s will put up the money to play a Pick 6 and a Pick 4 ticket at that track.

If there is one at both tracks, then Johnny will pick the track for that day. All you have to do is go over to Bally’s, sign up and appear in person to have a chance at the big dough. Renowned Las Vegas race analyst Ralph Sirocco will be the ticket captain in charge of constructing the tickets.

Everyone who is signed up will meet at Bally’s when there is a carryover and go over the races. You will be surprised at the amount of winners that can be caught with all the great input. Don’t worry RS, this RS will be there to help you!

Stations Casinos are getting ready to unveil their huge free race contest, which will be at Del Mar. I don’t have any of the rules as yet but you can bet that there will be a lot of free money available. As soon as the details become available we will pass them on.

With the dog days of summer almost here, there looks to be a lot of stuff to keep us horseplayers very busy.

Don’t worry sports fans, those big football contests are right around the corner.
