Stations eyes Del Mar fest

Jul 20, 2004 4:29 AM

Del Mar opens Wednesday. Thank you, Lord.

The "dog days of summer" are upon us and a heavy dose of football is right around the corner. This week, we’re focused on Del Mar and having fun in the California sun.

To celebrate this heavenly meet, all six Station Casinos Race Books will hold weekly drawings throughout the 43-day, seven-week session. The winners of the drawings will be part of a group that will hop a plane the morning of Sept. 6 and receive a wonderful Labor Day of racing at Del Mar.

"We are doing it because Del Mar is a short meet and one of the most magnificent places in all of horse racing," said Micah Roberts, the race and sports manager at Palace Station.

"It’s the first time all six of our Stations Casinos are involved," Roberts said. "Customers are given the VIP treatment. I wouldn’t miss it. I’ll be there betting with everyone else."

Every $20 wagered in the Race Book will receive one drawing ticket, with a limit of 10 per window visit. Drawings will take place each Friday during the meet, following the eighth race. First prize is an all expense paid trip to Del Mar for two. Second place will receive $300 in cash and third is worth $200.

The flight leaves McCarron Airport, with buses ready in San Diego to transport the group of 113 to the track. Upon arrival at Del Mar, the group will be escorted to a private skybox fully catered with food and beverages. The list of dignitaries in the skybox include Race Book Managers, a few Station Casinos reps and local horse racing media personalities.

When the racing card concludes, the group will return to the San Diego airport for the one-hour flight to Las Vegas.
