Del Mar stay inspires us
to bet Broncs

Aug 17, 2004 5:25 AM

Before I get into my preseason football picks, a few notes from my trip to Del Mar last week.

Just last Wednesday, the young apprentice jockey David Cohen got his first victory (paid $92.60) aboard Quiten Boy. David put in a very gutsy ride as he came through a very tight spot on the rail to get the victory. I talked to David after the race and he came across as a very intelligent and focused young man. Look for some good things from him in the future.

I also ran into a very good friend Don Stanley who has a horse running at Del Mar very soon (possibly Aug. 22) named Winning Stripes. Don said "bet" and we will!

NFL PRESEASON WEEK #2

Thursday, Aug. 19

Giants (+3½) at Panthers (34): Both teams coming off nice wins. Carolina was of the few road teams to win last week. Am inclined to take the points. GIANTS.

Friday, Aug. 20

Vikings (+2½) at Falcons (39): Michael Vick played about 10 seconds in the Falcons first pre game. He may get 20 this time. Vikings good preseason dog. VIKES

Bucs (NL) at Jaguars: TB schedule messed up by the hurricane, but Jags showed no offense vs the Dolphins. Will side with Gruden, his good pre-record and better QB’s. BUCS.

Ravens (+3) at Eagles (32½): I though the Eagles would show more vs Pats but they didn’t. Billick looks to have Baltimore in good form. RAVENS.

Saturday, Aug. 21

Lions (+3) at Browns (36): Detroit is 3-0 at home but 0-2 on the road in last five pre-games. Dawg boys look to get going at home after dismal showing last week at Tennessee. BROWNS.

Titans (pk) at Bills (34½): Buffalo took advantage of several Broncos miscues to get the win last week. Tennessee 5-0 SU and ATS in last five. TITANS.

Texans (+3½) at Steelers (34): Texans shut out the no-show Cowboys. Steelers in much need of a win at home or some fans may be trying to unload their season tickets. STEELER$$$

Patriots (NL) at Bengals: Cincy schedule also hurricane damaged. Now must face the best in football after tough game at TB on Monday. Pats 5-0 SU and ATS last five preseason. PATS.

Redskins (+1½) at Dolphins (33): Already the third game for the Skins and they could be feeling it. Like the home team. DOLPHINS.

Jets (+4) at Colts (39): Indy can score at will but Jets are a very good preseason dog. JETS.

Saints (NL) at Packers: Green Bay lost both home games last year after being almost unbeatable in the past. Don’t know what happened Monday but win or lose you have to side with GB. PACKERS.

49ers (+3½) at Bears (35): Frisco just lacks it right now. Bears showed some grit in win for new HC Lovie Smith and look to keep it going at home. BEAR$$$

Cowboys (+1) at Raiders (35½): Bill Parcells will be all over his offense this week. If they can’t score on Oakland, it could be a long season. COWBOYS.

Chargers (+3) at Cards (34½): Marty ball doesn’t care about preseason. Zona puts one in the win column. CARDS.

Broncos at Seahawks: Denver opened a one point dog at Buffalo and went to a three-point favorite. Broncs self-destructed with some key TO’s in falling to 0-2. Shanahan will have them ready. Seattle is home after tough game at Green Bay. BRONCOS$$$

Monday, Aug. 23

Rams (NL) at Chiefs: Martz has a bad preseason record. Vermeil is usually low key. KC may be more motivated playing at home on national TV (ABC). CHIEFS.
