Many of the smaller casinos around town serve as a kind of community center as well as a gaming entertainment complex.

That’s certainly the case of Jerry’s Nugget in North Las Vegas, whose oil derrick-like sign has been beckoning customers for nearly 40 years.

In addition to a full-blown casino with a live keno lounge, race and sports book, table games and bingo hall, Jerry’s Nugget features a popular restaurant, Canal Street Café, noted for its generous prime rib and massive desserts.

Over the past few years, Jerry’s Nugget has been renovated with a modern theater, dance floor, bakery and gift shop. Later this month, the hotel will open a new restaurant, Uncle Angelo’s Pizza Joint.

Opened in 1964, Jerry’s Nugget on Las Vegas Blvd. North was established when owners Jerry Stamis and Jerry Lodge purchased Mordell Earl’s old Town House Bar. Four years later, they bought out their closest competitor, the Bonanza Club, which featured the city’s tallest sign, the famous oil derrick.

Still owned by the Stamis family, Jerry’s Nugget has remained a popular gathering spot for North Las Vegas and downtown denizens.

"We’ve built our reputation on catering to the locals," says General Manager Peter DeMangus. "Our customers are comfortable with our easy access parking, they feel at home in our restaurants, and they can always find their favorite slots and video poker games."

DeMangus adds that Jerry’s Nugget has maintained a philosophy of creating a friendly customer-oriented atmosphere with close attention to detail.

"Our customers know their favorite floor person and waitress by name and vice versa," DeMangus says. "Our customers return month after month, year after year; many have been with us for the past 40 years."

To commemorate four decades of service, Jerry’s Nugget is launching a 12-week long Âíanniversary celebration with over $140,000 in cash and prizes being awarded. The party starts on Aug. 29 and runs through Nov. 21, with dozens of events planned, including:

Many of Jerry’s Nugget’s long-time employees will be recognized by the 40th anniversary pins they will be wearing over their name tags. The pins will reflect the decade in which the employee was hired.

Five employees have worked at the casino for more than 30 years, while 28 employees have been at Jerry’s Nugget for more than 20 years.
