Hotels pay tribute to 9/11

Sep 7, 2004 5:53 AM

September 11 will remain a day of infamy in the hearts and minds of all Americans. We can all help to remember and pay tribute to the heroes and victims of that tragic day of three years ago with activities that will not only make you feel good, but will also reward your good deeds.

On Saturday, Wildfire Casino (Rancho Drive across from Texas Station) will host a big benefit barbecue in the north parking lot in memory of 9/11.

"Fire Fighters called out to the Wildfire" will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Southern Nevada Fire Fighters Burn Foundation. Donations are appreciated but the barbecue is free and open to the public. Coors and Coors Light draft will sell for 75 cents. Radio station 93.1 KQOL will be broadcasting live and Michael E. Mendon & Co. Jewelers has provided a beautiful sapphire diamond ring to be raffled off.

The Palms Casino Resort will do its part by hosting a blood drive on Saturday in the Key West Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donors will receive a free buffet, a patriotic T-shirt and an entry into drawings from sponsors to win prizes and gifts. Walk-ins are accepted or call 702-228-8400 for an appointment. Donors must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and have not donated in the past eight weeks.

See it from the top. The Stratosphere continues to offer a good free deal for Ultimate Rewards Club members. Show your club card for free tower admission from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Club membership is free.

Finally, for those non-diet conscious carnivores who consider a half-pound hamburger a mere appetizer, the Plaza Diner at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas has just the hamburger: The 9-pound "Big Daddy Barrick Burger." Served with a bun 12" in diameter, a half head of lettuce, two tomatoes, two onions, four pickles, mayo, mustard and 12 slices of American cheese, the burger’s big enough to feed a softball team and is available for $29.99. If one person finishes the burger within 24 hours, it’s free.

If the "Big Daddy Barrick Burger" is a bit much, it only takes finishing the 1½ pound "Barrick Burger" within 30 minutes to earn a spot on the "Barrick Burger Wall of Fame." The Plaza Diner and the Western Hotel and Casino both offer the scaled-down, though still enormous, "Barrick Burger" for $8.99.  It is prepared with an oversized bun and three times the lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, mustard and of American cheese.  Both the "Big Daddy Barrick Burger" and the "Barrick Burger" are served with a side of fries and Maalox!

Until next time, eat well, play well, stay well.
