Bookies had field day
at my expense!

Sep 21, 2004 8:48 AM

It’s just amazing watching these games and seeing what happens to cause your money to go down the drain.

”¡ Virginia Tech gives up a long, meaningless pass for a TD late in the game to allow Duke a back door cover. The game opened 25 and went as high as 29. Books win!

”¡ NC State had the Buckeyes kicking out of the end zone behind just a field goal. The Wolfpack fumbled at the 50, all of a sudden it’s 10-0 and the entire game changes. Ohio State wins 22-14. Books on top again.

”¡ Michigan State is driving and its running back lets the Irish take the ball right out of his hands. Notre Dame’s DB runs it back for a long TD to turn the game around. Spartans lose by seven as a 3-point dog. Again, the books triumph!

”¡ Then on Sunday, Green Bay is headed for a score that would make it 10-7 Pack, but the Bears return a fumble 90 yards for the score and it’s suddenly Chicago, 14-3. Books win again! In all, a good week for the bookmakers. Not so good for the little guy.

We need to move on and try to recoup.

College
Thursday, Sept. 23

Miami FL (-27) at Houston: I wouldn’t normally lay this big spread with the "Canes" but will after 48-0 destruction of La Tech last week and Houston’s inability to put points on the board. Houston scored seven on Rice and was hammered by Oklahoma as a 37- point dog, 63-13. MIAMI

Friday, Sept. 24

B. Green (+1) at N. Illinois: BG had week off after putting up a good fight against Oklahoma, losing by only 16 as a 33-point dog. BG is 3-1 SU and ATS last four meetings. BOWLING GREEN.

BYU (+21) at Boise St: Opened 17 and is already up to 21 so bet early if you’re going to side with me and go with Boise on the Blue. You can always take back 24 late and go for a little middle. Boise crushed BYU last year in Utah, 50-12. BOISE ST.

Saturday, Sept. 25

Purdue (-20) at Illinois: I won’t buck the Boilermakers offense that scored 51 and 59 points the last two games. The Illini yielded 27 points to Western Michigan last week so it looks like Purdue can get another 50. PURDUE.

Wash (+11) at N. Dame: Huskies have no defense and Irish, off past two weeks, look like they really want to play. They are motivated and will take advantage of porous Washington defense. NOTRE DAME.

Wash St (-11) at Arizona +11: Mike Stoops really has his team playing some big time D in Tucson. Almost got the win last week but for a failed late FG attempt. Washington State got 21 points against New Mexico and 12 against Colorado. Look for about the same here. ARIZONA $$$.

Penn St (+3) at Wisconsin: Look for Joe Pa’s Nittany Lions to gain some revenge from last year’s 30-23 home loss. Wisky having hard time putting points on the board. That trend will continue. PENN ST.

USC (-23) at Stanford: Trojans juggernaut continues on its mission to the national title. Don’t look for it to stop here. USC has easily handled Stanford the last two years and the Cardinal are once again overmatched. USC

N’western (+14½) at Minn: Gophers have looked like a scoring machine so far. This is the first conference game and don’t see Minnesota letting up even a little. MINNESOTA.

Last week: 5-5

Season: 14-12.NFL

Sunday, Sept. 26

Bucs (+3½) at Raiders (36): Raiders got me last week, giving up late score to win by 3. Naturally, I got hooked. TB has scored 16 points in its first two games, losing 16-10 at Washington and 10-6 at home against the Seahawks. No covers and both games "under." I will stick with that trend. OAKLAND, UNDER.

Monday, Sept. 26

Cowboys (+1) at Redskins (35½): The Skins should be a small favorite between 2 and three points. There is one huge trend in this game that not even Joe Gibbs may be able to stop. Cows are 11-1 ATS last 12 meetings and 3-0 last three with all going "under." DALLAS, UNDER.

Last week: 0-1

Season: 2-2
