Second thoughts bail me out

Oct 19, 2004 7:52 AM

It’s a good thing they have half time betting as I was able to save myself on the Miami, Florida game last Thursday. The books put up Miami -7 for the second half and the Hurricanes came out firing to get the money easy.

How about those Packers! Green Bay at home on Monday night football looked like a bad college team after being hammered by the Ttitans 48-27. The defense was a complete no show. Tennessee, on the other hand, looked like a Super Bowl contender.

One week later according to my system that I put forth last week, the Titans came back and scored just 10 points at home in losing to the Texans 20-10. The Packers came back and beat the Lions in Detroit, 38-10.

Now just to note a few streaks that are going on: The Panthers have played five straight games "under" the total. The Bengals are 0-5 ATS. The Broncos last five games have gone "under." The Colts are 4-0-1 ATS. The Saints have played their last five games "over" with a nonexistent defense.

There’s more. The Giants are 4-0 SU and ATS in the last four games. The Eagles have won and covered all five games with the past four going "under" the total. Pittsburgh has won and covered the last four since Big Ben has taken over at QB.

Now, on to a few games that I like for the upcoming week.

Thursday, Oct. 21

Syracuse (+15) at W. Va: WVU coming off a nice win at Connecticut last week. Syracuse coming off a hard fought loss at home against Florida State and just may be a little beat up. This series has been dominated by the favorite over the years. Trend should continue. W. VIRGINIA

Saturday, Oct. 23

UTEP (+1) at La. Tech: The Texas El-Paso offense has gotten in high gear, winning and covering the last four games including a nice win over Fresno State. UTEP has lost all three meetings against La Tech, but has its best shot at turning the tide here. Should be high scoring. Last possession may well win. I like up and comers. UTEP.

Ball St. (+10) at Akron: Ball State has absolutely no defense. Akron should be able to score early and often. Just lay the 10 and go to the bank. AKRON.

SD St. (+4½) at N. Mexico: Lobos playing a very tough schedule and got much needed win at UNLV last week. New Mexico can score and San Diego State has very little offense. New Mexico is 8-2 ATS in the last ten meetings and 3-0 SU/ATS in past three. N.MEXICO.

Fresno St. (+10½) at Boise St.: Triple revenge for Fresno, having lost all three meetings to Boise and hammered the past two. Boise mighty tough on the blue rug but has been way overpriced this year. Broncos 0-4 ATS in last four games, including a 45-42 escape against Tulsa as a 19 point favorite. FRESNO $$$

San Jose St (+21½) at Hawaii: In case you are still in the book at 9 p.m, this looks to be a very good play. San Jose is 6-2 ATS versus the Rainbows. These two have played some very high scoring games and this looks like one that could get into the 80s. If you see a total, make a play. San Jose looks to be able to trade TD’s with Timmy Chang. SAN JOSE, OVER.

Last week: 2-2

Season: 25-28

Now to the NFL.

Sunday, Oct. 24

Eagles (-7) at Browns (41½): Just don’t see Cleveland scoring many against this Philadelphia defense. Eagles have shut down everyone. Looks just like another defensive contest. UNDER.

Monday, Oct. 24

Broncos (-5½) at Bengals (43½): Cincy (0-5 SU/ATS) having a hard time putting points on the board. Bengals have scored more than 20 just once. Denver’s last five games have gone "under" the total. Make it six. UNDER.

Last week: 0-1

Season: 6-7
