Canes able at Virginia

Nov 9, 2004 4:56 AM

Miami, FL (+3½) at Virginia: When betting on sports you must have a short memory.

The play last week (Clemson) was more or less a "hangover" game against Miami, giving up points also followed by a big upset. The loss to the Tigers probably earned me two more points than I should normally receive when facing a very good Virginia team this Saturday.

The Cavaliers are playing for the bigger bowl bid and have not been in that spot for a long time. Virginia is well coached and has at least three NFL prospects. The Cavs polished off Maryland a few days ago and caught some other teams at opportune times. Their only true test was a double-digit loss to Florida State. By now, we can see that the Seminoles and the Canes are a notch below the top ranked teams this year.

Virginia would have been better off playing this particular game on the road because the home game brings added pressure. Miami should be getting back a few of their injured players. The biggest help will come to the offensive line. Virginia players and coaches read the paper and know that they will be the favorite. Miami HC Coker will play up that point.

I have no reason to doubt the outcome should be decided late, so I should be in striking distance taking the points. Plus, I can root big for Jessie Hester’s kid as well. MIAMI.

Take care, Jimmy V.
