Rise and shine UFC fans as UFC Fight Night is live from the fighting home of final battle of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier “The Thrilla in Manila,” that’s right in Manila, Philippines.
The card gets an early start on FoxSports1, with the prelims starting at 5AM and the main card beginning at 7AM also on FS1.
The main event is a contest between two of the most popular UFC fighters No.2-ranked featherweight Frankie Edgar vs. unranked Urijah Faber.
Edgar is looking for another shot at the UFC Featherweight Championship currently held by Jose Aldo. Aldo defeated Edgar by decision in 2013. Since then Edgar has rolled off three straight wins.
Faber has moved down to featherweight after his training partner T.J. Dillashaw became the Lightweight Champion. He has put together two victories since losing to then Lightweight Champion Renan Barao.
Edgar is a huge favorite and I am not sure he should be as big of a favorite as the bookmakers have him. While Edgar should be favored I would not be shocked to see a huge performance from Faber keeping him in the discussion for a future featherweight title shot. Especially if Conor McGregor defeats Jose Aldo on July 11th for the title, McGregor vs. Faber or Edgar would do huge business for the UFC.
At $4,000 on Kountermove I will recommend using Faber, even if he does fall in defeat to Edgar, I expect him to give Frankie all he can handle leading to some solid points even in a loss. Something tells me that Faber finds a way to win though.
On to the picks salaries are from Kountermove.com:
Gegard Mousasi ($5,300) – After destroying Dan Henderson, Mousasi gets Costas Philippou, bookmakers have Mousasi favored to win this fight inside the distance. He will. Projection: KO2.
Diamonds in the Rough
Urijah Faber ($4,000) – At such a low cost it’s too hard not to go with Faber. He has the ability to win this fight by mixing it up. I can see the California Kid outworking Edgar en route to a unanimous decision or late stoppage. I tend to see a very even fight that Faber just edges out. Projection: Split decision win.
Yui Chul Nam ($4,900) – Just under the $5K average, Chul Nam or as I like to call him by his nickname the Korean Bulldozer has six first round finishes in his career. Look for another one against Phillipe Nover. Projection: KO1.
