An Illinois Senate panel has approved regulations for daily fantasy sports websites to address concerns stemming from a state opinion that said such wagers are illegal under current law.
Under the plan approved by a committee Wednesday, the Illinois Gaming Board would oversee the contests, and operators violating the law would face fines. The proposal would forbid anyone under 21 from participating, among other things.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan said in a December advisory opinion that betting through sites like DraftKings and FanDuel is illegal. Some lawmakers have written proposals to legalize it, saying many Illinoisans play. A similar plan is pending in the House.
Opponents included those who represent Illinois’ existing casinos. They said the proposed regulations are insufficient and questioned the cost of enforcement.
