Fantasy sports wagering is moving closer to legalization in Louisiana where the full Senate will soon vote on legislation that would allow voters to decide this fall whether fantasy wagering via a smartphone app should be legal in the state.
The Louisiana House’s has already approved the measure. The Senate’s Judiciary B Committee voted 4-1 last week to advance the bill.
House Bill 484 would allow each parish to approve fantasy sports gambling through a November ballot initiative. If a parish voted against it, people could not legally play the games on their smartphones or computers while in that community. Mobile daily fantasy sport gambling is already legal in 19 states, according to the industry.
If parishes approve fantasy sports gambling, legislation will be needed in 2019 to determine how to regulate and tax it and the Gaming Control Board would also have to establish rules for just how fantasy sports apps would be allowed to operate in Louisiana.
