Motor sports fans and the general public got their first look Wednesday at the unique trophy to be presented to the winner of the inaugural South Point 400 on Sept. 16. The custom, hand-crafted trophy was designed by Amri Studio Owner Christina Amri, an award-winning artist that has been creating custom glass work for South Point owner Michael Gaughan for more than 35 years. The South Point 400 trophy took a team of six artisans to sketch, design and produce. It’s a one-of-a-kind carved crystal prize measuring 31 inches high and 21 inches wide, and weighing an imposing 58 pounds.
“We wanted to make sure that we worked with a designer that really understands who we are at South Point and what this race stands for,” said South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa Owner Michael Gaughan. “For more than three decades Christina Amri has created some of the most unique designs for my properties, including the glass ceiling and door inside of Michael’s Gourmet Room. I knew Christina and her team of designers would be able to design a trophy that captures the amount of passion and enthusiasm we have for this historic race.”
Also Wednesday, just ahead of the upcoming South Point 400, voting began for the 2018 National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) Most Popular Driver Award presented by Hooters. Fans can cast a vote for a single driver once per day at www.nascar.com/mostpopulardriver or on the NASCAR mobile app. Votes shared by fans on Facebook and/or Twitter count double. To be eligible, drivers must have declared series points and be in the Top 40 in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points by the start of the voting. Voting closes for the NMPA Most Popular Driver Award on Tuesday, November 27 at noon ET
The 2018 NMPA Most Popular Driver will be announced during the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Awards program Thursday, Nov. 29 at Wynn Las Vegas. NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM will provide coverage of this year's program.
The South Point 400 will be contested at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and is the first race of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, in the Round of 16.
