A Washington-based libertarian think tank, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) has issued a new study endorsing sports wagering as a states’ right decision.
U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear oral argument in a lawsuit challenging the federal sports gambling ban, on Dec. 4th. The report says the ban prevents states and their voters from deciding on the legalization of sports gambling for themselves and leaves consumers exposed to unchecked gambling fraud.
“The federal government has no business telling states they can’t legalize sports betting if they want to,” said Michelle Minton, CEI senior fellow and author of the report entitled, “Let States Regulate Sports Gambling within their Borders”. The report contends that because sports betting is currently a multi-billion dollar industry, keeping it illegal will only leave consumers unprotected from gambling fraud and allow criminal organizations to profit and thrive in a black market
