Due to the explosion of sports betting applications and bricks-and-mortar establishments here in New Jersey and on the East Coast over the past two years, the marketing and promotion of these businesses can be pretty overwhelming, especially in one’s email box.
Did you receive as many free bet if deposit this much, special football parlays, bet this — get that, etc. over the past Thanksgiving holiday last week?
Here in New Jersey, once a new sports app debuts, you tend to download the app, throw a couple of shekels in it so your account is viable and then wager and have some fun.
I did that with a few of them — DraftKings, PointsBet USA, 888sport, Unibet, Borgata, etc. — when they first debuted. But once you do that and you give them your email and other pertinent contact information, you are at their beck and call.
As a matter of fact, as I’m writing this column, PointsBet USA sent me an email just now for Massive Cyber Monday Boosters!, where they are offering two massive boosters per hour from 12-8 p.m. ET for today only.
Did they know I was writing this column?
Anyway, the marketing and promotion of these tend to increase, especially around the holidays. It could be any holiday, but Thanksgiving is probably one of the highest levels of promotion they do with the traditional three NFL games and with all the college basketball holiday tournaments going on.
Here are a couple of examples of what I received on Thanksgiving Thursday this past week:
At Borgata Online, they just wanted you to play on the app. So if you were a casino player, they gave you 10 free spins. If you were a sports bettor, they gave you a free $10 bet in your account for you to use on anything.
I took advantage of the $10 free bet of course.
At DraftKings, they gave everyone a free $5 sports bet and then presented “three courses of hearty promotion” which included an appetizer: Bet on result of drive or next team to score with a $5 NFL Flash Bet risk-free for any Thanksgiving game;
The main course: Place a parlay on three NFL games, and they would pay you out as if you hit an additional 4th leg (which was a 33 percent profit boost equal to an extra leg of -300 odds)
And the Dessert: If you bet $25 on the point total for any one of the NFL Thanksgiving Day games, you would get $5 for every turnover and $1 for every sack in that particular game.
I did the $5 free bet.
They also make you think, “Would I actually bet that?” Or, “That seems like a good bet, let me try it.” Or, “No way that is happening and the outcome will be that.”
I can only imagine what Santa will bring to my email box this month.
