I have a ton of memories growing up back in the 50’s and 60’s in Steubenville (Ohio) when it was a booming mill city. Great memories that no one can take away.
Just loved going to midnight Mass with the family and then coming back to my grandparents’ home and eating a late night feast of the seven fishes. My mom loved Christmas, especially trimming the tree and putting angel hair on it, I’m sure that would be illegal today.
One of my favorite gifts was a small pinball game. I played it morning, noon and night and as the great one Elton John sang, I became a pinball wizard. One thing I do miss is each year we could always depend on new Christmas songs coming out. Now we have no more “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas,” Elvis having a “Blue Christmas,” Paul McCartney and Wings singing “A Wonderful Christmas Time” or the Beatles singing “Christmas Day.”
Loved the great Ronettes’ Christmas Album, but nothing new lately. I can remember trolling the hallowed halls of Steubenville Big Red with my Spanish Club singing the Christmas songs in Spanish, Cascabeles tra la la la, Noche de Paz, Noche de amor. We would all be tossed in jail today.
With that said, we will move on and look for some winners. We need some cash to buy some Christmas gifts.
