Let me take you back to January 26, 2013. UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson was defending his crown for the first time against young but talented John "The Magician" Dodson.
The two fighters traded shots, showed great mixed martial arts technique but ultimately Johnson took control in the championship rounds winning a decision. I remember thinking at the time if Dodson ever gets another chance he would fare better.
Normally when rematches occur in fighting it usually turns out poorly for the loser of the first fight. Since the first battle, Johnson has been one of UFC’s greatest champions and is arguably the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Combine that with the fact that he is as exciting as most fighters on the roster – Johnson is a star.
While Mighty Mouse might not have the box office appeal of a Brock Lesnar, I can’t think of a flyweight champion that would ever draw like Johnson. Should Dodson pull the upset (he’s a 4-1 underdog) he won’t draw as well as the institutional champion.
This is a fight I wouldn’t be surprised to see a repeat performance from Johnson, but sometimes I just believe fighters are due and I will take a shot on Dodson to upset the champion. Hopefully the third fight will be just as fun as the first two.
Here are the picks with salaries from Kountermove.com:
Paul Felder ($5,200) – Felder is coming off his first loss, a decision to Edison Barbosa. The Irish Dragon was so upset he left the cage before congratulating Barbosa for which he later apologized. Felder wasn’t mad at the judges he was mad at himself, it was clear the fight was within his reach but he didn’t let his hands go. He won’t make that mistake against Ross Pearson. Projection: KO1.
Diamonds in the Rough
John Dodson ($4,800) – Dodson is a huge risk at his rather high price but he does have the advantage with Johnson of fighting a possible five round fight. However I think if Dodson does make it happen it will be him catching Mighty Mouse on the chin and finishing the champ in a stunner. Projection: KO3.
Frank Mir ($4,600) – I was a huge critic of Mir, but I have to tell you I am so impressed by his boxing. He has all of a sudden found dynamite in his hands and wish him all the best on his climb back up the UFC heavyweight ladder. I truly believe he will defeat Arlovski with another one-punch KO. Projection: KO1.
