Almost completely ignored by the major press outlets was the announcement by the Associated Press that the five-year-old thoroughbred mare Zenyatta had finished second in the balloting for "Female Athlete of the Year."

Albeit a distant runner-up, Zenyatta, the only female to ever win the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Classic, received 10 votes while winner, tennis star Serena Williams, was favored by 80 sports editors.

Zenyatta, retired from racing, will be shipped to Kentucky in time for the 2010 breeding season.
