"Instant Racing," or machines that permit people to wager on previously run horse races, has been approved by lawmakers in Nebraska.

Called "nothing more than a slot machine" by opponents, "Instant Racing" has been a boon at Kentucky Downs where it was installed earlier this year. The machines originated in Arkansas.

Whether the measure will be approved by Gov. Dave Heineman, an original opponent who recently said he would carefully review the bill, remains to be seen. The Senate vote of 26-18 was four votes shy of what would be needed to override a veto.

If the bill becomes law, the state’s racetracks would be permitted to add the machines to their gaming agenda.
