Oaklawn Park hosts racing festival

Feb 24, 2016 2:18 PM

As Oaklawn (Hot Springs, Ark.) moves into the most exciting part of its live racing season, there will be plenty of action both on the track and in gaming area. Highlighting the month are the Racing Festival of the South Preview Day Saturday, March 19 and the debut of the Fun Squad, a new initiative to create an even more entertaining atmosphere in gaming.

The best 3-year-olds in the country continue their journey towards the $1 million Arkansas Derby in the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 19, which served as the launching pad for eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah last year. The Racing Festival of the South Preview day will also be highlighted by the $350,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) and $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2), which are the final local preps for the $750,000 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) April 16 and $600,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) April 15, respectively. First post is 1 p.m.

March 19 also marks the return of the “Park Inside the Park” as Oaklawn’s Infield will now be open for the final five Saturdays of the meet. Fans are invited bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the races from the infield where there will be a Beer Garden, Kids Zone and big screen TV.

To highlight the new program, the $20,000 Fun Squad Fest will be played every Thursday from 6 – 10 p.m. in March with winners called every 15 minutes. However, the Fun Squad will not be limited to just the Thursday promotion. Donning crazy neon-colored uniforms and various noise-makers such as tambourines and kazoos, the group will be responsible for executing every promotion. Sporadically, the entire Marketing team will put on the uniform and invade the game room floor and host mini promotions to keep the fun going.

The luck of the Irish will be upon guests March 17 when we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the Shamrock N’ Roll Party from 5 – 10 p.m. There will be a $4.99 Irish dinner in Lagniappes, $2 Draft Beer and $5,000 Free Play Drawing.

Every Monday and Tuesday in March, Oaklawn will host the $12,500 Beat the Buzzer Reel Tournament starting at 7 p.m. The top 16 teams that qualify will be eligible to return for the final on March 31 where they will be playing for $5,000 Free Play.

Live racing continues every Thursday – Sunday until April 16. There will also be two Wednesday cards April 6 and 13. First post is 1:30 p.m. weekdays and Sundays and 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Lagniappes Restaurant offers a Catfish special every Wednesday from 5 – 10 p.m. Every Friday from 5 – 10 p.m. it’s Steak Night where guests can enjoy the best steak in Hot Springs or if they prefer, the catch of the day.
