MORE HONOR: Was gaining with every stride with a four-wide run vs. the even money, Baffert first time starter IKE. This colt just missed by a dwindling half a length and will be a solid single next time out.
SHACKALOV: $30K maiden ran his eyeballs out in this race but could not get to the odds-on, 40-cents-on-the dollar winner though six lengths clear of the rest in this eight horse field. Will be another solid single next out if kept at this $30K maiden level.
MASKED: Really didn’t look like much off his last race and now Baffert was sending him down the hill in this straight maiden with his new “go to” rider Van Dyke in the saddle. He was let go at 9/1 in the betting as Baffert is not known for winning many races on the grass. This colt battled tooth and nail on the outside and drew away for fun down the lane winning by almost three lengths vs. a real tough field. As they say, the horse has left the barn and there will be no 9/1 next out but he should be a good play again for a repeat win. $$$
SAYER’S HILL: Looked like a great play in this $40K optional claimer and he ran to his figures, winning by more than two lengths to pay a nice $7.20 for the win. He was claimed by David Jacobson who seems to be on track to get every runner here on the West Coast, leaving the cupboard bare as they say, but we will see. We do like this one back at this level next time out.
NEXT SHARES: Was exiting our HTW list and got off at a juicy 5/1 in the Thunder Road at a mile on the grass. He was dead last until the top of the lane when unleashing a powerful late run. Was gaining with every big stride down the lane but came up a head short of the place and another half-length from the win as he really had no pace to run at. It was a top notch effort and we will leave him on the list.
AIR JOCKEY: First time starter squeezed at the start but moved up nicely between runners in this maiden special race making a good late run to be a clear third in a real nice effort first out.
