John Asher, the dulcet-toned media voice for Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby has died from an apparent heart attack at age 62.
As a frequent guest on the Race Day Las Vegas radio program, Asher was known as a savvy handicapper and ardent devotee of the “Sports of Kings.” Race Day host Ralph Siraco said via Twitter that Asher would be “missed but never forgotten.”
Asher, whose official title was vice president of racing communications, died Monday morning in Orlando where he was vacationing with his family.
“To say that racing has lost one of its giants with the passing of John Asher does not begin to capture the impact this man has had and will continue to have on the Churchill Downs family,” said Kevin Flanery, president of Churchill Downs.
