Horseplayers will be greeted Friday, Sept. 28 not only with the opening of Santa Anita’s Autumn Meet, but with a new low take-out Pick Five wager conducted by the Stronach Group.
Laurel Park will be the hub for the new wager, Sal Sinatra, president of the Maryland Jockey Club, has announced.
The Stronach Five will be a Pick Five that incorporates races from various Stronach tracks. The opening Stronach Five will include Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, and Golden Gate Fields, in addition to Santa Anita. The wager will be offered every Friday.
“The goal is to run all five races in under an hour, possibly in as little as 45 minutes,” Sinatra said.
The new bet will have a bettor-friendly 12-percent takeout, however, the minimum wager will be $1. On days when no tickets pick all five winners, the entire pool will carry over to the next week.
“The dollar minimum should help build some nice carryovers,” Sinatra said.
The bet is fashioned after the popular Magna 5, which started in 2004 but has not been held since 2010. That $2 minimum wager had a 22-percent takeout.
Santa Anita has previously announced it will begin offering a 20-cent Rainbow Pick Six wager on, opening day, mothballing, for a trial period, the traditional $2 Pick Six. The new bet is patterned after the Rainbow Six at Gulfstream Park.
Additionally, Santa Anita will guarantee a pair of one-day only Rainbow Pick Six jackpot pools. They are a $250,000 pool on opening day, and a $1 million jackpot pool on Saturday, Sept. 29
