What an exciting time of year. Baseball’s regular season is winding down, football is here and the WNBA playoffs are right around the corner. I guess two out of three isn’t bad.
It has simply been amazing what the Atlanta Braves have done, winning going away in the National League East. At press time, the Braves had a 14½ game lead over Washington, which was projected to win the division before the season began.
The Dodgers remain hot as they continue their winning ways in the NL West. It’s interesting to see what money can do when assembling talent. It works for the Dodgers, but not the Angels who continue to be the laughing stock of the AL at 14 games out of first place in the West after being favored again to win the division.
The Angels will miss the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. Meanwhile, the Tigers keep on keepin’ on with very good starting pitching, solid defense and a great hitting lineup from top to bottom. This team is scary good even though manager Jim Leyland is extremely overrated.
I believe this year’s Tigers team is better than the one that made it to the World Series a year ago. They did not have Torri Hunter last year and the team defense was a joke. Texas and Oakland continue to battle it out in the AL West. I marvel at this A’s team, how they seem to be in contention every single season with a very limited payroll.
The Rangers have been the best UNDER team this entire season thanks to outstanding pitching and an average hitting lineup. The Red Sox have been a pleasant surprise in the East where no one saw this coming before the season started. The Rays are right there and will make a solid run before it is done.
This year’s biggest surprise has got to be Pittsburgh. The Pirates remain first in the NL Central in spite of being in the same division as the Reds and Cardinals. I did not see this coming and continue to be impressed with how they have done it. Remember, when it comes to major league baseball, “good pitching always beats good hitting…sometimes.”
When it comes to voicing your opinion, has your mouth ever gotten you into trouble? I have to say yes, having been married and divorced twice. Former major league slugger Jack Clark threw former teammate Albert Pujols under the bus by accusing him of using performance enhancing drugs.
Clark’s exact words were, “I know for a fact he [Pujols] was [on PEDs]. The trainer that worked with him, threw him batting practice from Kansas City and worked him out every day, basically told me that’s what he did.”
Clark said this on his radio show and was promptly fired the next day. He had also implied Justin Verlander was under the microscope as well and his velocity this year is way down. I wonder if Clark watches baseball. Verlander’s velocity is fine even though he has not been up to par this season.
Jack Clark…Are You Kidding Me? You had a nice gig if only you could get out of your own way.
Let’s talk baseball totals. The Rangers continue to be a dead UNDER team with the D’Backs, Royals, Twins, Yankees and Pirates all cashing UNDER on a regular basis. On the other side, Toronto has been this year’s best OVER team thanks to very good power hitting and an underachieving pitching staff, namely the starting rotation. Other good OVER bets are the Angels, Tigers, Phillies and Mariners.
