Pirates look to inch closer to first-placeTake 955 MILWAUKEE BREWERS / PITTSBURGH PIRATES OVER 9 (4:05 pm PT)

The Pittsburgh Pirates look to inch closer to first-place when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of their four-game series at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park. Brewers’ rookie Zach Davies will oppose Bucs veteran Jeff Locke. The Pirates are four games behind first-place St. Louis and two in front of the Cubs for the first wild card.

Prior to beating the Brewers (62-79) on Friday, the Pirates (84-56) had lost seven straight and nine of 10 in the series to a Brew Crew squad that is 17-24 against the rest of the division. Since being swept by Milwaukee at the start of the month, Pittsburgh’s starting rotation has been rock solid, posting a 1.69 ERA. Locke though has been anything but a lock and will be out to stop a personal two-game losing streak.

Even more troubling, Locke (7-10, 4.56 ERA) has made it through at least six innings only once in his last nine, going 2-4 with a 5.79 ERA during that stretch. After struggling in his major-league debut, Davies (1-0, 3.97 ERA) picked up his first career victory on Monday by tossing seven solid innings in a 9-1 triumph over Miami. He allowed one run on four hits and did not walk a batter, as opposed to the three free passes he issued in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh.

If recent trends are any indication, today’s game is a good bet to top the total. In their last 10 games the Pirates are 8-2 to the OVER while the Brewers are 9-1 over the same stretch.

The OVER is 6-2-1 in Locke’s past nine starts and 13-2-1 in Milwaukee’s past 16 road games.
