The Arizona Diamondbacks look to pile on the slumping San Diego Padres when the two teams meet in the opener of a three-game series at Chase Field in Phoenix. James Shields goes against Jeremy Hellickson in a matchup of former members of the Tampa Bay Rays rotation.

San Diego (67-77) has dropped four straight and eight of 10 including a weekend sweep in San Francisco. The pitching staff surrendered 27 runs in the series and is 6-15 with a 5.31 ERA in their past 21 games.

Arizona (68-75), which is 1.5 games in front of San Diego in the National League West, has problems of its own. The D’backs have dropped 14 of 20 including 2 of 3 over the weekend to the Dodgers.

Shields (11-6, 3.90 ERA) is looking for his fourth victory in the past five decisions. He’s 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA against Arizona this season and is 2-2 with a 6.38 ERA in four career starts.

Hellickson (9-8, 4.60 ERA) is making his first start since Aug. 17, when he suffered a hamstring injury in a win over Pittsburgh. He hasn’t fared well against the Padres this season posting a 1-2 record and 7.54 ERA in four starts. He has a 7.67 ERA in five overall outings.

The Padres are 2-7 in their last nine games while the Diamondbacks are 6-13 in their past 19 overall. The OVER is 9-2 in the last 11 series meetings while the Padres are 15-5-1 to the high side in their past 21 road games.
