Take 973 Oakland Athletics / 974 Houston Astros OVER 8.5

Time is running out for the Astros in their bid for their American League West Division title. They’ll try to keep the pressure on the first-place Rangers as they close out a three-game set with Oakland A’s in Houston. First pitch is set for 2:10 pm ET at Minute Maid Park where Collin McHugh will toe the rubber against Aaron Brooks.

The Astros (77-71) have lost eight of 10 and are now 2.5 games behind Texas with 14 games remaining.  They’ve also lost most of their lead for the second wild card spot with the Angels trailing by just 1.5 games. They’ll close out their homestand with series against the Rangers and Halos.

The A’s (64-85) have lost six of their last 10 games but have taken six of nine from the Astros since the All-Star break.
The Astros will send McHugh (16-7, 4:05 ERA) to the mound as he tries for a second straight win over the A’s. Overall he’s 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in four career starts against the Athletics.

The rookie Brooks (2-3, 7.68 ERA) has had a rough few weeks. He was bailed out by his offense on Tuesday and picked up a win against the Chicago White Sox despite allowing six runs and 10 hits in six innings. Over his last three starts he’s surrendered 17 runs in 12 1/3 innings. Brooks is 0-1 against the A’s this season.

Oakland is 19-9 in its last 28 games overall but 8-18 on the road last 26. Houston is 40-16 its last 56 home games and 16-5 in McHugh’s past 21 home starts.
