Take 957 Boston Red Sox / 958 New York Yankees OVER 8.5
The Yankees will be attending the postseason party but barring a dramatic change it will be as the first wild-card and not as the division winner. New York will try to keep its slim American League East title hopes alive hosting Boston in the opener of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.
The Yanks will send Ivan Nova to the hill opposite rookie Eduardo Rodriguez. New York (86-69) sits four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays with seven games left in the regular season, but remains a comfortable five ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, who sit third in the AL wild-card standings.
Boston (75-80) has long since been eliminated from playoff consideration but still has an outside shot at finishing at or better than .500. The Red Sox climbed out of last place in the East by outscoring Baltimore 17-0 in a three-game sweep.
Rodriguez (9-6, 3.97 ERA) takes the hill looking to extend a string of 29 consecutive scoreless innings by Boston pitchers. The Red Sox posted shutouts in each outing of a three-game sweep of Baltimore capped by a 2-0 win in Sunday’s home finale.
Nova (6-9, 4.87) is 1-5 in his last six starts, but held the mighty Blue Jays to one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-0 loss last Wednesday. He’s 1-5 with a 7.31 ERA over his past six starts and 1-4 with a 9.41 ERA in his last five at Yankee Stadium. Nova has lost both season meetings with Boston and is 3-5 with a 4.99 ERA in 11 career games against them.
The Red Sox are 3-10 in the last 13 meetings and 13-6-1 to the OVER in the last 20 games overall.
