National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver has again publicly stated his league’s support for the legalization of sports wagering in the United States.

Silver told ESPN hosts Mike Golic and Trey Wingo Monday morning that he’s in complete support of lifting the current sports wagering embargo that now applies in most states. However, the NBA leader is seeking a federal law to regulate it rather than each state creating it’s own rules and regulations for sports betting.

He said any state should be able to decide if they want to have it, but the same federal legal framework should govern it in any state that wants to allow sports betting.

The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in early December on New Jersey’s efforts to get the high court to declare unconstitutional the current law banning single-team sports wagering in every state except Nevada. Limited sports wagering is also currently legal in handful of other states.

Silver did not address the notion that if the Supreme Court rules that sports wagering is a “states’ rights” choice, how the federal government might then impose its own regulations on the practice.
