Play of the Day

College basketball (NCAA tournament opening round)

Arkansas/Pine Bluff vs. Winthrop -3 ½ (total 112½): Tournament action gets under way with this "play in" game, featuring two "small" schools battling for the right to play NCAA powerhouse Duke University on Friday. There’s really little to separate these two teams. Winthrop has the better won-loss record, but that’s because Pine Bluff opened the season with 11 straight non-conference games against mostly BCS schools, including five teams in the NCAA field of 64. Unfortunately, they lost to all five tourney teams, by an average margin of 15½ points, with their best effort a 12-point loss to Georgia Tech. Their best effort in that 0-11 in that stretch was a 3-point loss to Akron. Winthrop wasn’t as ambitious in its non-conference schedule, though they were 0-4 against BCS-caliber schools, with an average loss margin of 20½ points, with 13 points their closest margin. In the last few weeks of the season, Pine Bluff has played well, winning 11 of 12 games while holding opponents to an average of 53 points/game. That should be enough in this spot. Arkansas-Pine Bluff -3½ with a lean to UNDER 112½
