(Note: GT sports editor Mark Mayer will assess the 35 college football teams on the LVH sports book list of OVER / UNDER win totals leading up to the Aug. 30 season openers. Today, the Hokies).
Pleading the case:
• Virginia Tech won 11 games a year ago and has one of college football’s elite coaches in Frank Beamer, now entering his 26th season.
• Toughest test on the schedule is ACC preseason favorite Florida State, but the Seminoles have to go to Blacksburg.
• Special teams and defensive scores usually decide at least one game and Beamer’s teams have thrived in those areas for years.
• Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas is one of the nation’s best and a real load at 6-feet-6 and around 240.
• The Hokies are the only team in the country to win at least 10 games over the last six years.
Prediction: OVER 9. It won’t be easy with the toughest games on the schedule on the road, but any number below 10 is a bargain.
