It's time again to start betting on college football

Life is good. It’s even better when college football is here.

It is that time of year again where opportunity is knocking as college football gives you a chance to enjoy watching football as you make money picking winners. College football is the second most watched sport on TV next to the NFL.

It is no secret that the SEC has dominated and won the championship game the past 7 years. Alabama is coming off back to back championships after destroying Notre Dame a year ago 42-14 as a 9½ to 10 point favorite.

It simply isn’t fair giving the best college coach on the planet, Nick Saban, a full month to prepare for one game. This year’s Alabama team is again scary good. Their offense might be even better than a year ago as they return their QB, RB and top two receivers.

Defensively, we know the Tide roll being No. 1 in the nation in total defense and scoring. Alabama will be tested this year by their schedule. They have to travel to Texas A&M and also have a home game against LSU before getting to and taking the SEC championship game against the East winner.

If any team can do it, Alabama can. Time will tell as the sports books have them pegged to win 11 games. The odds makers have an Over/Under for the season wins at 10½ for Oregon, Ohio State and Louisville. Boise State and Florida State are projected to win 10 contests.

You can agree or disagree by betting the Over or Under. It is your money, respect it. As my buddy Lem Banker has told me on more than one occasion, “bet with your head, not over it.”

This has been a challenge for some people, me included. In the past, my ego would get in the way as I would lose 3, 4 or 5 games in a row. I would make the common mistake of pressing and/or doubling up.

This is not smart and is very costly. It is important to keep everything in the proper perspective. Never chase losses. I have learned the hard way. In 30 years of betting sports professionally, I have seen some very good handicappers fall by the wayside because of poor money management skills.

Every sports bettor will make more money betting sports by perfecting four key skills, Patience, Discipline, Money Management skills and the ability to Shop and recognize value.

As we look to Week 1 there has been a big move on the UNLV vs Minnesota game for Thursday. The Golden Gophers opened as 17 point home favorites. The sharp wise guys have bet it down to 14. Keep an eye on this game as it approaches kick off to see where the money is.

In business, like in sports betting, some people simply FTM (follow the money). Joe Public is not driving that line, professional wise guy sports bettors are. The idea according to my good buddy and fellow professional sports bettor Dink is to “be on the move early or against it late.”

Dink is right. If you like Minnesota, then you might lay 13½ to 14. If you like UNLV, I hope you took +17 as opposed to +14 because you would have lost 3 points of value.

I don’t care how good of a handicapper you are, if you are compromising 3 points of value consistently, you will get buried. He with the most information generally wins, in life and in professional sports betting.

Get dialed in for my “How to make money betting football” seminar at Harrah’s on the Strip in Las Vegas on Friday, Sept. 6 from 9 am to 5 pm. I will be joined by Dink, who was featured in the sports betting movie Lay the Favorite starring Bruce Willis as Dink.

Hollywood did not like the movie. I say screw Hollywood, they also did not like Caddyshack. Most sports bettors that I have talked to loved the movie, me included. I know most of the characters including myself “Scott” who is often seen in Dink’s office in the movie.

Check it out with an all star lineup including Vince Vaughn, Catherine Zeta Jones and Rebecca Hall playing my friend Beth. You can catch me LIVE Monday thru Friday mornings on Fox News Radio at 7:05 at and every Thursday locally on KSHP (AM 1400) radio for Pritchard’s Picks with Brett Grant.
