Doc’s Sports went 7-7-1 through the first four weeks of the college football season in our weekly picks for GamingToday and we went an even 1-1-1 in this past Saturday’s selections.
We went with one of the newest members of the Big Ten last Saturday and Rutgers came through with a 31-6 victory over Tulane as a 12-point home favorite. We went with Toledo over Central Michigan by 14 points at home as our second pick, but that game ended as a push in the Rockets’ 42-28 win. Our lone loss of the week came in Texas A&M’s tougher than expected 35-28 overtime victory against Arkansas. We went with the Aggies laying the 10.5 points at home.
Here are this week’s selections:
RICE -6 over Hawaii: The Owls snapped a three-game losing streak to start the season with this past Saturday’s 41-23 romp over Southern Miss as 8.5-point favorites on the road. They piled-up 217 yards on the ground behind Jowan Davis and quarterback Driphus Jackson threw for 178 yards and two scores to help pace the win.
Hawaii went into last week’s bye with a straight-up record of 1-3 after losing to Colorado 21-12 on Sept. 20 as an 8.5-point road underdog. The Warriors come into this matchup with a 0-6 record against the spread in their last six games against Rice in what will be the first meeting since 2004. Look for Hawaii to struggle on defense against an Owls’ offense that is finally starting to find its form.
NOTRE DAME +1.5 over Stanford: The Fighting Irish continue to climb in the national rankings with a perfect 4-0 SU (3-1 ATS) start that includes this past Saturday’s 31-15 victory over Syracuse as 8.5-point road favorites. The offense has now posted at least 30 points in all four contests behind quarterback Everett Golson. He has passed for 1,142 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 69.6 percent of his throws.
Stanford is now 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS) after beating Washington 20-13 this past Saturday as a 7.5-point road favorite. The Cardinal head into the game against Notre Dame with a 2-5 record ATS in their last seven games against a team with a SU winning record. The home team in this storied rivalry is 5-1 SU in the last six meetings and revenge will be a factor this time around after Notre Dame’s 27-20 loss last season as a 16.5-point road underdog.
OKLAHOMA -4.5 over TCU: The Sooners continue to hold down the No. 4 spot in the current AP Top 25 with a perfect 4-0 SU (3-1 ATS) start. They come into this Big 12 clash well-rested after last week’s bye and are looking to pick-up where they left off with an offense that is averaging 44.8 points per game, complementing a defense that is allowing an average of just 16.5 PPG. Trevor Knight has thrown for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns and Samaje Perine has rushed for 419 yards and another five scores on the ground.
TCU ran its record to 3-0 SU with a 56-0 blowout of SMU this past Saturday as a 31-point road favorite. The Horned Frogs have gotten fat against some suspect competition to currently hold down the No. 25 spot in the polls. Given the soft schedule it is very doubtful they will be able to keep pace with the highly potent Sooners this upcoming Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma is 4-1 ATS in its last five games as a road favorite.
