Irish will rise up at Stanford

Doc’s Sports Services’ five-week winning streak with our free weekly college football picks for GamingToday came to an end this past Saturday, but this followed a profitable 11-4 mark during this run.
This past Saturday got off to a solid start with Rutgers’ 31-21 victory against Army as a 4.5-point road favorite. We just missed cashing-in on California’s 35-22 loss to Stanford as a 12.5-point underdog the road and we also lost on Notre Dame’s 19-16 squeaker over Boston College as a 16.5-point favorite at Fenway Park.
Here are this week’s selections:
Take DUKE (-4) over Wake Forest: The Blue Devils bring a four-game losing streak both straight-up and against the spread into their regular season finale, but this game presents a great opportunity to go with this team this time around. Duke is 7-2 ATS in its last nine road games and in the series against Wake Forest has covered in five of the last six meetings on the road.
It has been a long season for the Demon Deacons ever since they posted a promising 2-1 SU start. Wake brings a five-game SU losing streak into this matchup in which they have been outscored by a combined 96 points.
During this slide the offense has only managed to average 14 points a game and on the year this unit is ranked 122nd in the nation in scoring with an average of just 17 points.
Take WISCONSIN (-2.5) over Minnesota: Our home-town Badgers are out of contention in the Big Ten West Division title race at 5-2 SU in conference play following Saturday’s disappointing 13-7 loss to Northwestern as 12-point home favorites, but they can still get themselves into one of the bigger bowls with a win on Saturday at 8-3. The motivation will be running high to get that bad taste out of their mouths against a team they have beaten SU in the last five meetings on the road.
The Golden Gophers’ promising 4-2 SU start has faded to an overall record of 5-6 with just one SU win in their last five games. They did manage to cover against Illinois their last time out with a 32-23 victory as 4.5-point favorites at home, but against the better teams in the Big Ten they are 0-4 SU when closing as underdogs.
The concern against Wisconsin is an offense that is averaging just 365 total yards and 25 points a game going up against a defense that is ranked first in the nation in points allowed (12.4).
Take NOTRE DAME (+3.5) over Stanford: The Fighting Irish cost us last week in a lackluster effort against BC, but we like their chances to make a statement on the road this Saturday that they are still one of the top teams in the nation. They are currently ranked fourth in both major Top 25 polls and a convincing win against a quality team on the road would go a long way towards possibly swaying the College Football Playoff committee to add their name to their top four list.
Stanford’s 38-36 loss to Oregon on Nov. 14 as a nine-point home favorite proved costly to its playoff chances, but a SU 8-1 record in Pac-12 play is good enough to earn a trip to the conference title game from the North Division. With less on the line, their motivational level will not be nearly as high as Notre Dame’s.
