Rocky Long's San Diego State Aztecs are overrated

Thursday’s Hawaii Bowl pits Cincinnati (7-5) against San Diego State (10-3), the newly minted MWC champ that is on a nine-game winning streak.

But don’t fall for coach Rocky Long’s Aztecs.

First, Long is 2-7 in his bowl coaching career (ATS and SU) at New Mexico and SDSU, losing straight up five times despite his team being a favorite.

And about that winning streak. It came against a collection of MWC teams that had a cumulative 44-68 mark and excluded a meeting with league power Boise State. And even in SDSU’s conference title game win over Air Force, the game was at home and the Aztecs didn’t cover the 6-point line.

One more thing: Long’s Aztecs have gone 3-5 ATS in the regular season after a bye.

Cncinnati, meanwhile, played in the surprisingly powerful AAC, which featured Memphis and Houston, two teams that played into November before losing. And although the Bearcats lost to both they beat the spread each time on the road, almost upsetting Memphis when backup QB Hayden Moore passed for 557 yards. He’s expected to start this game.

Cincinnati looks good getting 3 points.
