Time for luck to return for Notre Dame

Time for luck to return for Notre Dame

Looking back at the first of this past Saturday’s three free picks for GamingToday, we came up short in Nevada’s 27-22 victory against Fresno State as a 9.5-point home favorite. Things got much better from there with the right call in San Diego State’s 26-7 victory against UNLV as a 14.5-point home favorite and in Oregon State’s stunning 47-44 overtime upset of California as a 12.5-point underdog at home.

This 2-1 mark leaves us just shy of .500 on the year at 8-9-1.

Here are this week’s selections:

Take NOTRE DAME (-2.5) over Stanford: It has been a rough go of it for the Fighting Irish this season with four losses against just two wins both straight-up and against the spread. There is something about this long standing rivalry that brings out the best in this team. Notre Dame is 17-4 SU in its last 21 home games and in this matchup has won seven of the last eight at South Bend against Stanford. The Irish also have a 6-3 edge ATS in the last nine meetings overall.

Stanford’s fall from grace and the national rankings started with a stunning 44-6 loss to Washington on Sept. 30 as a 3.5-point road underdog. Things only got worse in last Saturday’s 42-16 loss to Washington State as a 7.5-point favorite at home. The Cardinal are banged up on both sides of the ball and it is going to take a few more weeks before they can return to the form that led to a 3-0 start (both SU and ATS).

Take WISCONSIN (+10.5) over Ohio State: The Badgers are coming off a bye following a heartbreaking 14-7 loss to Michigan as 12-point road underdogs on Oct. 1. They are now 4-1 both SU and ATS and a proven commodity in the Big Ten as legitimate contenders to win a conference title this season. Wisconsin is ranked fourth in the nation in points allowed (12.2) and its offense is powered by a running game that is anchored by Corey Clement and Dare Ogunbowale.

Ohio State is still the class of the Big Ten at No. 2 in both national polls. The Buckeyes improved to 5-0 SU on the year with an uninspired 38-17 victory against Indiana this past Saturday as heavy 28-point home favorites. Having to go on the road to face the Badgers will be their first true test of the season and while they could very easily stay undefeated with a SU win on Saturday night, you already know that nothing comes easy against Wisconsin.

Take OREGON STATE (+12) over Utah: The Beavers paid off with last week’s SU upset at home and we like them again this week at Reser Stadium getting 12 points against a Utah team that is still a bit overrated in our book. Oregon State (2-3 SU and ATS) used a heavy dose of Ryan Nail last week running the ball with 221 rushing yards and three scores on just 14 carries. The offense as a whole gained an incredible 474 yards on the ground against Cal.

The Utes are 5-1 SU (3-3 ATS) following this past Saturday’s 36-23 victory against Arizona as 9.5-point home favorites. The previous week they lost to Cal on the road, 28-23, after closing as two-point favorites in that Pac-12 tilt. Utah is averaging 28 points a game behind a balanced offensive attack and its defense is ranked 20th in the nation in points allowed (19.0). Looking back at the past seven meetings in this conference clash, the Utes are 4-2 SU in the last six games, but just 2-5 ATS in the last seven.
