The NCAA tournament is getting ready to kick off and I’m expecting a good one.
College basketball has had a better year than their NBA counterparts and the march to the title should be fun and exciting. I love trying to handicap the various matchups at this early stage because anything can happen and usually does.
As I look at the brackets for the first games, I like the matchup between two teams with similar resumes, Wisconsin, an 8 seed, versus Virginia Tech, a 9 seed, and look for Virginia Tech to upset the Badgers.
Another 8 versus 9 matchup will be between the team from my hometown, the Northwestern Wildcats, versus the Vanderbilt Commodores. People might think NU lacks the experience of being in the tournament, but the long climb of getting there was the experience they needed, and I believe NU will beat Vandy.
The mismatch of the opening week is a five seed Virginia, versus UNC Wilmington, a 12 seed. Virginia has struggled of late and being a 5/12 matchup, many people will look to take UNC Wilmington. I look for Virginia to win big!
When it comes to the favorites, I will stay away from Kansas and Arizona, both perennial favorites who usually disappoint. Duke is playing the best ball and along with the best coach, Mike Krzyzewski, look for the Blue Devils to get it done.
