Here are this week’s selections:
Take N. ILLINOIS (+2.5) over Boston College: The Huskies are coming off a straight-up 5-7 record in 2016, but they ended the year on a strong note with four victories in their last five games both SU and against the spread. The total stayed “under” or ended as a “push” in seven of their last nine games. Senior Jordan Huff is back to lead Northern Illinois’ ground game and senior wide receiver Christian Blake should be one of the top targets this Friday night when it comes to moving the ball through the air.
Boston College remains strong up front on offense with four starting linemen back from last season’s 7-6 campaign (SU and ATS), but it still has the longest odds on the board at +10000 just to win the Atlantic Division in the ACC. The Eagles struggled to move the ball through the air last season and with more questions than answers in this year’s passing game, they could have a tough time pulling off the win on the road against a solid Northern Illinois ball club.
Take MICHIGAN (-4) over Florida (at Arlington, Texas): Expectations are running high this season for Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines in what should be a season-long battle with Ohio State and Penn State for the East Division title in the Big Ten.
Michigan is coming off a SU 10-3 record in 2016 and will be looking for a fast start out of the gate in a tough spot to open a new season. Veteran quarterback Wilton Speight is back to lead an offense that was one of the most balanced units in college football last season with an average of 213 rushing yards and 212 passing yards a game.
Florida is one of the top favorites to win the SEC East, +155 betting odds, after going 9-4 SU last year. The Gators were a tough team to bet on at times with a shaky 6-7 record ATS and the total stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine games. With quite a bit of turnover on defense, especially in the secondary, this could be too tough a test for Florida right out of the gate. It should still be a close, hard fought contest, but the betting lean is toward the Wolverines.
Take BOISE STATE (-11) over Troy: Boise State has continually been one of the top teams in the Mountain West and this season should be no exception as a clear +155 favorite to win the Mountain Division. The Broncos are coming off a 10-win run through the 2016 season and with a number of starters returning on both sides of the ball, they should be able to pick up where they left off with a perfect run through the nonconference portion of their schedule. This offense averaged 34 points a game and was ranked 24th in the nation in total yards.
Playing out of the Sun Belt Conference, Troy went 10-3 SU last season with a 6-7 record ATS. The Trojans failed to cover in six of their last eight games with the total going OVER or ending as a push in five of their last seven contests. They lost six of their top eight tacklers on defense, which could put them in a very tough spot to slow down Boise State’s potent offensive attack.
