Bowling in the Bahamas, could be a Cinderella story

If you’re looking for a Cinderella story in college football this year, look no further than the UAB Blazers who had not played football since 2014. That’s the same year that Coach Bill Clark was hired to coach the program and subsequently lead the team to its second-ever bowl-eligible record.

Only due to financial constraints UAB discontinued its football program soon after, and when it was revived again in 2017, many were not expecting much. Only low expectations did not get in the way of the team’s 8-4 record, and this week the team was swimming with the dolphins as they got pumped up for the Bahamas Bowl.

Clark was recently named CBS Sports’ Coach of the Year, for according to Dennis Dodd (CBS Sports) “took what essentially was an expansion franchise to a second-place tie in Conference USA’s West Division and the program’s second bowl berth.”

UAB will face the Ohio Bobcats at Thomas Robinson Stadium in the Bahamas Bowl on Friday night. The odds makers in this game have the Bobcats favored by 7.5 points and the total is hovering just under 60.

If you do your homework you’ll see that Ohio lost its last two games. Only neither loss was a blowout. Make no mistake; this Ohio team is very good. Led by Coach Frank Solich, the Bobcats have a very good chance at winning.  Ohio went 8-4 in the regular season and this is the ninth bowl game under Solich. Last year the Bobcats faced Troy in the Dollar General Bowl and lost 28-23. The year prior, they faced Appalachian State in the Camellia Bowl, and fell 31-29. Oh and prior to that, they lost in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl 37-20 to East Carolina.

Since my son has attended this university, they’ve not won a bowl game. This is why they must win this year, because my son is a senior and it would be awesome if they won. Right?  Truthfully, this game can go either way.

I’m rooting for the green team to come away with a win, but my pick is UAB. If Ohio wins, I am not too sure it will be by 7.5 and so I’m going to play it safe and pick the Blazers.  Momentum is a powerful thing, and we all know how Cinderella ends!

Selection: UAB +7.5
